Kasper’s Triangle Plaza, chosen as a jumping-off point for the study, is located at the confluence of Telegraph and Shattuck Avenues in Oakland and has sat without use for 15 years. A pedestrian plaza at Kasper’s Triangle would activate the street life and engage with residents and surrounding businesses of the neighborhood, including, Kasper’s Hot Dogs, a historic neighborhood institution that occupies the site.
Working with the BID, GWO developed some concept designs for a pedestrian plaza, closing off traffic on southbound Shattuck and on 45th Street with bollards and painting the pavement to create movement and boundaries. The main goals are to improve traffic conditions, increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and create a gathering space for the neighborhood.
Currently, Groundworks Office and the BID are engaging with community members and will coordinate with the City of Oakland on their development of Telegraph Complete Streets.
