The existing campus was outdated and reminiscent of days when water was plentiful and Kentucky Bluegrass was en vogue. Our approach was twofold: make spaces for people and deepen the connection to California's rich ecology and maritime past.
Phase 1 of the project introduced an entirely new planting palette to the campus. Using drought tolerant and native plantings reduced water consumption dramatically.
In Phase 2 of the project, we set about designing place-making nodes for the campus. Each node received a bespoke bench, constructed of reclaimed western red cedar and weathering steel. Rough, bulky, and super comfy, the benches reference the neighborhood's historic past of the Embarcadero's working waterfront, beautiful in its pragmatic and straightforwardness.
